💍 Nine days before her wedding, Elsa opened the forty-first email of the morning. It was from the venue, about chair hire. It said: "Further to Mr. Reid's call yesterday, we confirm the cancellation of the main hall." Yesterday. Her fiancé had cancelled their wedding on Tuesday afternoon — and that evening, at dinner, he had asked her to pass the salt. One hundred and ten phone calls later, the wedding was gone, and so was nine thousand pounds of her parents' savings. But the hall was still paid for. The food was bought. The flowers were cut. The band was booked. At ten past three one morning, Elsa sat on her sofa and said out loud to an empty room: "Somebody could use it."
