Betty Ford Told America Everything. Except The One WORD Her Children Had To Pull Out Of Her She is remembered as the first lady who told America the truth. About her breast cancer, seven weeks into her husband's presidency. About her daughter, on Sixty Minutes. About abortion, marijuana and the Equal Rights Amendment, while her husband joked that she was costing him millions of votes. But the one truth she is most famous for did not come out of her by itself. For fourteen years, the pills never stopped. Her assistant's list of prescriptions ran to three pages. In April 1978, her own children sat her down in the living room in Rancho Mirage, and her daughter was the first one to walk in. Twelve days later, a second press statement added a single word the first one had left out. To understand why it took her so long to say it, you have to go back to Grand Rapids, to July 1934, and to a salesman named William Bloomer.
