The Dark Story of Vizcaya: A Palace Made to Look 400 Years Old, Lived In for 9 WINTERS Officially, Vizcaya is a gift. A palace on Biscayne Bay that a Chicago millionaire built for his winters, and that his family later handed to the people of Miami as a museum. But the paperwork tells a stranger story. James Deering, a harvester heir, spent fifteen million dollars on a house designed to look as if one family had lived in it for four hundred years. He had no wife, no children, and a disease draining his blood. He lived there barely nine winters. The three men who designed it fought over the credit until one of them called a lawyer and the New York Times printed a correction. A year after Deering died at sea, the Great Miami Hurricane came for the house and sank his yacht. The men who laid its stone are still listed in a federal survey as names unknown. And in March 1916, Deering sent a telegram about a weathervane that says more about him than anything he left behind.
