This is the last episode of the series, and it's the one we wish we could have watched before we started. Everything we learned doing the Twing Raid 2026, from two people who had never done anything like this before.
Tires come first, because almost every problem we saw out there was a tire problem. Ours were fine, but starting over we'd go a size bigger and reinforced: 175/70 R14 van tires, plus winter van tires. That does mean making room in the wheel arch, moving the fuel filler tube across, and rethinking your shock absorbers or running spacers, so plan it early rather than the week before inspection.
After that it gets cheaper and simpler. Extra lights look great but we only really needed them once. Skid plates are non negotiable. Radiator protection is worth thinking about, because plenty of people punctured theirs. Sand ladders are lovely but there is almost always another Twingo along within minutes, unless you're chasing points and refuse to press the button. And raising the car is, in our opinion, a must, even though the organisation only lists it as advice.
We also talk about money. The organisation says budget 7,000 and we ended up around 8,000 including crossing France, so that estimate is honest. Then the things nobody puts on a checklist: bring a tent that isn't 15 years old, bring earplugs because the bivouac parties run until one in the morning, and if you go during Ramadan you'll be awake at 4:20 anyway. Bring things for the children along the route, clothes, school supplies, toothbrushes, and skip the sweets.
And the short version, if you're on the fence: go. The Twingo is cheap, simple and surprisingly bulletproof, and anyone who can fix a bicycle can keep one running. Just find one without rust.
📍 Filmed on the drive home, somewhere between Bordeaux and Paris
