Quick Hike Fortress of Louisbourg

The Fortress of Louisbourg is a National Historic Site of Canada located on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, featuring a massive, partial reconstruction of an 18th-century French fortified town. Originally founded by the French in 1713, the settlement served as a critical fishing port and a strategic military stronghold defending the entrance to the St. Lawrence River. Its immense strategic value made it a prime target during the Anglo-French struggles for North America, leading to two historic sieges where it was captured by the British in 1745 and again in 1758, before being deliberately destroyed by British engineers in 1760. In the 1960s, the Canadian government undertook one of the largest reconstruction projects in North America, rebuilding one-quarter of the original town and stone walls. Today, it operates as a living history museum where costumed animators recreate French colonial life.
