Every other sad song in the Bible turns a corner. Somewhere near the end you get the “but” or the “yet,” the clouds break, and the song lands on hope. Psalm 88 never does. It starts in the dark, the man praying it feels abandoned by God and by his friends, and the last word of the psalm in Hebrew is darkness.
“You have taken away my companions and loved ones. Darkness is my closest friend.” Psalm 88:18 (NLT)
In this episode of Whiskey and the Writings, we look at why the darkest psalm in the Bible was kept in the songbook on purpose. It was written by the sons of Korah, the temple singers, basically the worship team, and they sang a song with no happy ending. We talk about lament, why church culture so often rushes us to the next step, and the thing in this psalm most of us were never taught to see: from the first verse to the last, he never stops talking to God.
This isn’t permission to camp in despair forever. There’s a time to press on (Paul says as much in Philippians 3). But Psalm 88 is in your Bible so you don’t have to fake being okay, and so you know you can stay in the conversation with God even when nothing makes sense.
What have you been rushing yourself through that God might be inviting you to sit in? Tell me in the comments. Push back if you want, just don’t be a jerk about it. And if there’s a passage you’ve been wrestling with, drop it below and I might break it down in a future video.

Whisky and the Writings is a subsidiary of Stories of TOV.
Our Mission at Stories of TOV is to empower others to find wholeness from God; through right relationships with others, and the rediscovery of His story.
1. We will produce engaging content—through video, audio, and written formats—that thoughtfully shares our perspectives on God and the Bible, inviting deeper exploration and understanding.
2. We believe people today are seeking a fresh perspective on who God is and what He’s doing in the world. As traditional church structures continue to decline, many are looking for new ways to connect with God and each other outside of those frameworks. With this in mind, we will establish local gatherings where individuals can take the next step in their faith. These gatherings will foster conversations in non-traditional environments, meeting people where they are and engaging with them in meaningful ways.
