After weeks of loneliness and disappointment in London, everything changes on one cold winter morning. Remembering a necklace of red African seeds and ebony beads given to her by a friend before she left Sydney, the author puts it on and heads out into the streets of Brixton. Within half an hour she meets Akono, the charismatic Nigerian Black Power speaker she’d watched at Hyde Park’s Speakers’ Corner the day before.
He is magnetic, funny and fiercely committed to the cause of racial equality, and he opens the door to the black London she has longed to enter. But beneath the breezy “Hello darling” there are early signs of a very different man: a sudden explosion of rage in the street, and a chilling interrogation in the snow of Hyde Park.
This chapter marks the turning point of the memoir, the moment a miracle begins to tip into something far darker.
