The best rocket launcher from every era, explained: on October 3, 1993, two American Black Hawks fell over Mogadishu, brought down by a dented Soviet tube designed more than thirty years earlier. How did a cheap pipe become the most feared weapon on Earth? This animated history goes era by era through the launchers everybody knows: the Korean hwacha at Haengju; Tipu Sultan's iron rockets of Mysore and his mechanical tiger; the Congreve rocket and the "rockets' red glare" at Fort McHenry; the bazooka, named after a comedian's horn; the Panzerschreck and the Panzerfaust; the Swedish Carl Gustaf hitting a warship at South Georgia; the M72 LAW; the Davy Crockett, an atomic recoilless gun; the AT4; the Stinger and Charlie Wilson's war; the Javelin; the Katyusha and High Mars; and finally the RPG-7. 0:00 Black Hawks over Mogadishu 0:35 1451: the hwacha 1:58 1780: Mysore rockets 3:09 1805: the Congreve rocket 4:30 1942: the bazooka 7:08 1943: the Panzerfaust 8:46 1948: the Carl Gustaf 10:10 1963: the M72 LAW 11:14 1961: the Davy Crockett 12:49 1986: the Stinger 14:12 1996: the Javelin 15:21 Katyusha and High Mars 16:37 1961: the RPG-7, the best of all How this video was made: the script was researched from museum collections, histories and published books, cross-checked between sources, then written and narrated for this channel. Where sources disagree (the numbers at Haengju, how much the Stinger changed the war in Afghanistan, how many launchers exist) we say so in the video. This is a history video, not a guide: nothing here explains how to use or build a weapon. Every scene is hand-drawn in our sketch style, and the real launchers and places are shown in photographs. Sources: US Army Center of Military History; Royal Armouries, Leeds; Victoria and Albert Museum, London; National Air and Space Museum; Mark Bowden, "Black Hawk Down"; Gordon Rottman, "The Bazooka"; Frank Barnaby, "The Rocket's Red Glare"; George Crile, "Charlie Wilson's War". Figures are approximate. Real photos: Wikimedia Commons (authors and licences in the pinned comment). The other side of the arsenal: the best assault rifle from every era on Sketchy Warfare.
