Louise D’Eer is a researcher at Ghent University studying “Compassionate Neighbourhoods.” Her work explores how participatory co-creation and local engagement can turn neighbourhoods into active partners in supporting people facing serious illness, dying, and loss — extending care beyond the formal healthcare system and strengthening social cohesion. This interview is part of the Swiss Young Academy’s Compassionate Science project, which seeks to foster a shift towards more empathetic and human-centered research practices. By highlighting and sharing examples from researchers who already integrate compassion into their work, the project aims to showcase best practices and inspire young researchers to reflect on the broader societal impact of their research.
