12 Alabama Towns So Dangerous Even Locals Avoid Them After Dark

Alabama’s tourism brochures are never going to show you this side of the state. Behind the courthouse squares, football fields, lake houses, college campuses, and quiet Southern downtowns are cities posting violent-crime numbers that look completely out of place with the image they sell during the day. One city on this list reported a violent-crime rate nearly five times the national rate. Another is a beautiful lake town surrounded by some of Alabama’s most desirable recreational property. One became so corrupt that the governor once sent in the National Guard and placed the area under martial law. And #3 is the one I had to check twice. For this countdown, we used the latest complete FBI city-level crime data and limited the ranking to Alabama cities with at least 10,000 residents. The order is based primarily on reported violent crimes per 100,000 residents. These numbers do NOT mean every neighborhood in these cities is dangerous. Enterprise is growing, benefits from the military economy, and looks nothing like the stereotypical “dangerous town.” Eufaula combines historic neighborhoods with one of Alabama’s most famous lakes, but its reported violent-crime rate still exceeded 700 per 100,000 residents. Phenix City carries one of the wildest crime histories in Alabama, including organized crime, political corruption, the assassination of Albert Patterson, National Guard intervention, and martial law. Dothan is a growing regional healthcare and retail center, yet reported more than 900 violent crimes per 100,000 residents. Alexander City might be the biggest surprise. Lake Martin is associated with boats, golf, vacation homes, retirees, and expensive waterfront property. Yet Alexander City reported roughly 1,024 violent crimes per 100,000 residents. Birmingham posted one of the highest rates on the list in 2024, but the city also recorded a major reduction in homicides during 2025. And Bessemer stood far above the rest at roughly 1,744 violent crimes per 100,000 residents, while also showing improvement from the previous year. ⚠️ IMPORTANT CONTEXT Crime statistics describe reported risk across an entire city. They do not mean every neighborhood, street, or resident experiences the same level of danger. Violent crime includes murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. Cities with similar overall rates can have very different offense patterns. Population size also matters. A small number of additional crimes can move a per-capita rate much more dramatically in a city of 12,000 than in a city of 200,000. The FBI also warns against using crime statistics alone to make simplistic comparisons between communities. Reporting practices, agency participation, population size, local conditions, economic factors, and neighborhood differences all matter.
