In 1969, Sears sold the equivalent of 1% of the entire American economy. It sold houses and cars by mail, and in 1988 it was half owner of an online store, six years before Amazon existed. Today it has five stores left. This is how Sears had every piece of the future, three separate times, and let go every time. CHAPTERS Sears history is a story of retail dominance turned to dust. We examine how a titan of commerce fell to just five stores. Sears was once the undisputed king of American commerce, pioneering the mail order model long before digital shopping existed. At its peak, the company was so integrated into American life that it even sold automobiles directly to consumers, proving itself a master of retail business adaptation decades ahead of its competitors. However, the company’s trajectory highlights a fatal shift in business strategy. By failing to capitalize on its early technological advantages, the brand slowly lost its grip on the market. Today, with the former headquarters demolished and only five locations remaining, the company stands as a case study in corporate decline.
