562,000 cars were written off in Britain last year — a car every 60 seconds. Two thirds of every damaged vehicle that goes through a UK insurer is now scrapped rather than repaired, up from around half six years ago. And most of them could have been fixed.
UK motor insurers paid out a record £3.2 billion in a single quarter this year, with the average claim now close to £4,900. The Association of British Insurers blames the cars themselves: the cameras, radar modules and driver assistance systems now built into every bumper, headlight and windscreen. A scrape that cost £400 to repair a decade ago can now end the car.
This video counts down 10 cars UK insurers are scrapping after damage most drivers would call minor — the VW Up, Ford Focus, Nissan Qashqai, Vauxhall Astra, Volvo XC60, BMW 3 Series, Range Rover Evoque, Nissan Leaf, BMW i3 and, at number one, the Tesla Model Y, whose structural battery pack one teardown engineer described as having zero repairability.
Also covered: how the write-off threshold actually works, why ADAS windscreen calibration more than doubles the bill on a Focus, Thatcham's rule that a scratched battery casing can force a full pack replacement, why one in five pothole claims ends in a write-off, what Category S and Category N really mean for your premium, unrecorded write-offs that never show on a history check, and how to challenge a valuation you think is too low.
Has your car been written off for something you thought was minor? Tell me the car, the year and what they offered in the comments.
