Saturday night, 11PM in Newtown — and Sydney is still wide awake. In this episode of SYDNEY AFTER DARK, I walk along King Street, one of Sydney’s most distinctive inner-city streets. The crossings are packed, restaurants are still full, bars are buzzing, and people of all ages are out enjoying the night. At first glance, King Street looks like an ordinary suburban road — but after dark, it feels like a completely different Sydney. This walk also looks at why Newtown stays so lively at night: its long history as a commercial strip, strong public transport, dense mix of restaurants and bars, live music culture, street art, and a local identity that has been built over generations. King Street is also currently being considered for a Special Entertainment Precinct, as Inner West Council and the City of Sydney work on policies designed to support later trading, live music and the night-time economy. In June 2026, the Inner West Local Planning Panel supported the proposal moving forward to Gateway assessment. Newtown is famous for its bohemian character, street art, vintage shops, food, bars and live music, with King Street at the centre of it all. No harbour. No skyline. No giant entertainment complex.
