Inside the Canadian War Museum | M1917 Tank & Behind the Scenes | Project 1918

Project 1918 hits the road for a visit to the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa. The main goal of the trip is to get an up-close look at the museum’s M1917 tank, an important reference for the team as work continues on their own restoration. Along the way, the team meets Michael Miller, Artifact Restoration Manager at the Canadian War Museum, and gets a behind-the-scenes look inside the museum’s restoration shop. Mike talks about maintaining the museum’s collection of military vehicles, the challenges of keeping historic armour operational, and how modern techniques such as 3D printing are being used to recreate missing components and display pieces. The team also examines some of the small details on the museum’s M1917, including a Canadian modification to the tracks designed to help relieve the buildup of snow and ice. With around 90 vehicles in the museum collection, aircraft, naval equipment and artifacts covering more than 400 years of Canadian military history, there was plenty for the Project 1918 team to explore.
