MythBusters — S10 E19 "Cannonball Chemistry" — Aired November 11, 2012 The theory holds that 14th century soldiers deliberately used stone cannonballs in battle specifically so that a defeated enemy couldn't collect and refire the ammunition back at them the way they could with reusable iron balls, and Kari, Tory and Grant set out to test the strategy and the physics behind it, first establishing a velocity benchmark by firing an iron ball from a genuine Civil War-era cannon loaded with a pound of black powder and clocking it at over 1,200 feet per second, then comparing stone cannonballs under the same conditions to measure differences in both performance and how each material behaved after impact, testing that took an unexpected turn when a misfire during setup sent a cannonball further than intended.
