The main stars of the festival are the massive wooden floats (hikiyama), adorned with figures of mythical creatures, helmets, and fish. Each of the 14 floats belongs to a different district of the city, and the locals pull them through the streets with immense pride, accompanied by the rhythmic beating of drums and chants of "En-ya!"
The atmosphere is brought to life not only by the floats, but also by the festival musicians. Each float is accompanied by its own group of flutists and drummers, who ride on the platforms and play traditional Japanese music throughout the entire procession. The piercing sound of the bamboo flute (yokobue) and the powerful beats of the taiko drums set the rhythm for the pullers, energizing the crowd and driving the massive floats forward.
In this video, we captured the festival's grand parade in 4K. Locals of all ages pull the floats with ropes, shout "En-ya!" and "Yoisa!", build up speed, and with a thunderous roar, spin these multi-ton platforms around street corners. This isn't just a festival — it's the very soul of Karatsu.
