The Exile of the Cid is the 3rd scenario of the 'El Cid' campaign, where the two goals are to destroy King Alfonso's castle and then to defend the city of Toledo by eliminating Count Berenguer. The first half of the scenario doesn't require much strategy. Once Cid mounts his horse, you start running away. Have Cid drawn most of the attention, so that the knights and pikemen clean up the scorpions and long swordsmen. When going down to the southern corner to find reinforcements, take care to keep your distance, otherwise the castle will destroy your forces or the pikemen and crossbowmen there will start fighting you when you're ill-prepared. (You CAN engage the crossbowmen and pikemen here, but micro is definitely needed.) Upon reaching the forward base in the south, you'll be given some buildings and resources to bust down the castle. Rams (3-4x) and cavalry archers (3-4x) are all you need, any other soldiers are a bonus, though for the second part you should train some 2x camels, 2x scouts and 3-4x knights. Have Cid go towards the castle to aggro out the crossbows and pikemen. Have your army clean up the enemy out of the castles range while rams will bust down the walls and the castle. That's the first part done and King Alfonso can be ignored for the rest of the scenario and will be your ally. (Although he does nothing anyway) With the castle gone, you can start the second half of the scenario now that the Cid has reached the town of Zaragoza. The castle walls are under attack by rams (x2), mangonels (x2) and a whole bunch of long swordsmen. Have the knights snipe the mangonels while the cavalry archers and the rest of your army clean up the rabble. Destroy the siege workshop and then you'll get resources and 4 villagers with which to build a town center. You could go inside the castle walls or outside the castle walls to the east. The castle will keep you defend inside but most of the resources are located in all directions outside the walls. I'd recommend the east, as it's easy enough to wall up, and you've got gold, fish and wood not far from there. You should be aggressive early on if you didn't lose too many units as 4 rams with camels, knights, scout cavalry and cavalry archers is more than enough to wreck Count Berenguer. Scout the base, but note that the eastern side is undefended, so that's where you should attack. He will field knights, pikemen, monks, rams and archers. Camels for the knights, scouts for the monks, cavalry archers for the pikemen and knights destroy everything else. Definitely build a few more scout cavalry as Berenguer is monk heavy and you don't want all your units converted. Rams should hit the case first, then the bombard tower and then all other military buildings. Once the town center is cleaned up with the majority of military buildings sacked and villagers killed, he should resign. Once Count Berenguer has resigned, victory is yours! Note: Gold is to the East and North of Cyan's main base should you need more of it.
