Free watercolor flower painting lesson for kids — a directed-draw floral project from Blackwing Foundation's 4th Grade Pathway, designed specifically for fourth-grade students. Standards-aligned, runs about 35 minutes start to finish.
In this free art lesson, students learn to paint blurry, brightly colored flowers in the wet-on-wet expressionist style of German artist Emil Nolde, whose floral paintings from over 100 years ago still feel vibrant and modern. Kim is joined by her daughter as they walk students step-by-step through wetting the paper, painting flowers with vibrant colors, and creating a soft, dreamlike background. The lesson uses lots of water to get that signature blurry effect — a great introduction to wet-on-wet watercolor technique.
★ Optional extension: once the background is fully dry, students can add a second layer to bring out vibrant flower details.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED

• Watercolor paints

ABOUT THE 4TH GRADE PATHWAY
This lesson is part of Blackwing Foundation's 4th Grade Pathway — a sequential watercolor curriculum of free video lessons built specifically for 4th-grade students. Each lesson develops watercolor technique, composition, and exposure to major artists in a way that's age-appropriate for nine- and ten-year-olds. Every lesson is aligned with California State Standards and National Core Arts Standards for 4th grade. We also offer pathways for Grades 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6 in art, plus separate pathways in handwriting and lettering. Find the right fit for your classroom at blackwingfoundation.org.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Emil Nolde (1867–1956) was a German Expressionist painter known for richly colored, emotional paintings of flowers, landscapes, and dramatic seascapes. He was one of the first artists to use watercolor as a fully expressive medium — letting the wet paper bleed colors together to create dreamlike, blurry effects. His flower paintings, made over 100 years ago, still feel modern because of their pure color and bold brushwork. Nolde teaches kids that watercolor's "mistakes" — the bleeds, the blurs, the surprises — are actually its most beautiful features.
