On Sunday, March 2, 2025, at about ten to four in the afternoon, a police officer in Parma Heights, Ohio, stopped a grey Toyota Camry with dark window tint and no state license plate. Instead of a driver's license, the driver offered what she called a "nationality card", issued by her consulate. She told him, "I'm not driving, sir." This video is the police release: six body cameras and a dashcam, all from that day. What happens: At the window, the driver says she's from Morocco, then from "Corporate State, Illinois". She refuses to give her date of birth, asks for a supervisor and then for the sheriff, and is ordered out of the car again and again. Officers tell her that refusing is obstructing official business and that she'll be arrested. As an officer in gloves stands at her door, she drives off. The radio says a tire-deflation device got "a good stick" before she left, and soon after, "The right rear wheel is flat." The pursuit runs north out of Parma Heights at the speed of traffic. The fastest speed anyone calls on the radio is 40 mph, and she stops at red lights along the way. Dispatch radios that she is on the phone with 911 herself during the chase. On Snow Road, she is stopped in traffic and officers on foot surround her car, but she pulls away again. Police in neighboring Parma send an SUV fitted with a Grappler, a strap net on the front bumper built to catch a fleeing car's rear wheel. By a railroad crossing on Brookpark Road, her car is stopped with the yellow strap pulled tight between the two vehicles. The moment the strap catches the wheel is hidden behind the SUV. Officers take cover behind their doors, and one has a handgun drawn. She is told to walk backward to the sound of an officer's voice, kneel, and lie down. She does, and she is handcuffed without a struggle. That evening, a detective sergeant tells her that "pursuits in Ohio are felonies". Asked why she drove off, she says she felt her safety was in danger, "because they put on gloves like they were about to punch out my window." From the parking lot to the railroad crossing, the chase lasts about seven minutes. Where the case stands: Parma police said she was charged with failure to comply with an order or signal of a police officer, for fleeing officers, which is a felony in Ohio. Local reports put her bond at $100,000 in Parma Municipal Court. Fox 8 reported the case was headed to a grand jury. We could not reach a court record showing what has happened since. She has not been convicted of anything and is presumed innocent. The driver is not named, and her name is muted where officers say it. The license plate of a bystander's vehicle is blurred.
