Two verses — the shortest passage of the season and possibly the most daily. Pride's first face doesn't swagger. It wears a very religious mask and sits down in a chair that was never ours. And James's argument isn't that judging is unkind. It's that judging is insubordination: the royal law has already ruled on this case, and to sentence your neighbor is to look at that ruling and decide it doesn't apply to him. There are only two postures available with God's law — under it doing it, or over it grading it. Also: the line between judgment and discernment, which this passage is regularly misused to erase. And the freeing question at the end — who are you to judge your neighbor? — asked by a letter that will tell you before it ends who actually sits on that bench.
