"What causes conflicts and quarrels among you?" Everyone has an answer ready, and it's always the same answer: it's them. James takes the question, turns it around, and points it at the person holding it. The smoke is outside; the fire is inside. He traces the mechanism with uncomfortable precision — you crave, you can't obtain, so you quarrel — and the obstacle in the way is almost always a person who has stopped being a person. Then eight words that stop you cold: you do not have, because you do not ask. This is the hardest diagnosis in the letter and, at the end of it, the tenderest promise. Grace is described as something that runs downhill. The proud aren't being punished with a penalty; they're standing on the one spot in the landscape the water can't reach.
