An older patient suddenly collapses in the waiting area of a dental practice, but the cause is not immediately apparent in this dramatised medical emergency training scenario.
The patient reports feeling tired after a busy day in the sun. After standing up, he becomes dizzy and collapses. Although he initially recovers and his airway, breathing, pulse and oxygen levels appear satisfactory, he remains weak and becomes unsteady again when attempting to stand.
With no obvious diagnosis such as chest pain, diabetes, epilepsy or a known cardiac condition, the dental team must assess an undifferentiated patient and decide whether further medical investigation is required.
The scenario explores:
• assessing a patient following an unexplained collapse
• checking airway, breathing and circulation
• monitoring pulse and oxygen saturation
• taking a focused medical and medication history
• considering a range of possible causes rather than assuming a simple faint
• recognising persistent weakness and inability to mobilise normally
• reassessing the patient when symptoms continue
• recognising when the cause is uncertain but potentially significant
• arranging urgent assessment by ambulance rather than allowing the patient to leave
The film highlights an important principle of emergency care: it is not always necessary to establish the exact diagnosis before recognising that a patient needs further medical assessment.
This film was originally produced as part of a series of medical emergency training scenarios for UK dental practices.
