Three weeks of planning for one window: the few weeks a year juvenile black marlin push into the shallows off the west coast of K'gari. Shaun Whale has timed the trip around it. First though there's the Inskip Point barge, the Eurong Bakery tradition, and a long run up 75 Mile Beach with Graham Cahill in his new 2022 Isuzu D-MAX, Shauno in the Dirty 30 LandCruiser, Az in the fresh Mits Alloy build and Bailey towing a Maverick Matrix camper behind an LS-swapped 80 Series. Indian Head is as soft as the boys have seen it in years, and Ngkala Rocks is worse: 100 people on the bank, tyres dropped to 15 psi, MaxTrax under a camper and a tandem tow to get the trailer over. The 80 is down a cylinder from a dead number eight injector and running in limp mode, which turns the southbound run into a snatch strap recovery off two rated recovery points with a tree trunk protector equalising the load. Then it runs out of fuel halfway across the island. Camp is Sandy Cape, where the tide locks the beach twice a day and access is capped at about 30 4WDs, and where Graham Cahill cooks the crispiest beer battered fish going with a rice flour trick and homemade tartare sauce. The back half swings inland to Lake Wabby, across the island on the VMS to Awinya Creek for sunset over the water, then out on the flats at 4:30am trolling gar fish on circle hooks through tuna schools thick with sharks. Gear that earned its keep: a 3,000W inverter and 300Ah of RedArc lithium running an induction cooktop, an air-inflated annex, and air conditioning in a camper trailer at the top of the island.
