Inside Hide and Seek Coffee, an unassuming café in downtown Shenzhen making the most inventive Chinese coffees we've ever tasted. Welcome to Global Next: China Edition, where we go looking for the future that's already happening. Shenzhen's maker mentality isn't just in robotics and hardware. It's in the everyday "normie" products too. At this café, the owner (from Guangzhou, with three years in Thailand) keeps launching new drinks that fuse regional Chinese food culture with specialty coffee made from imported beans. Each drink is about the full experience, not only the taste. What we tried: ☕ White-Cut Chicken Coffee (白切鸡): a mango jelly "chicken" with ginger milk and espresso you drizzle on like soy sauce ☕ Shanxi Aged Vinegar Coffee: black vinegar, soda and brown-sugar rock candy, surprisingly smooth ☕ Fa Cai "Get Rich" Latte (发财): a light cinnamon latte that comes with a real lottery ticket ☕ Yogurt Coffee (酸奶): dried yogurt lining the cup, so you get sweet and bitter at the same time Plus Tofu, the café's resident stray cat.
