Your friend says 「まあ良かったよ」 about a restaurant. Did they love it — or was it just OK?
まあ (maa) is one of the words Japanese people use most in everyday conversation. It doesn't have just one meaning. Often, it adds a little thinking, a little softness, and keeps you from saying something 100% strongly.
In this episode, Maho talks about まあ and the everyday expressions that use it.
今日は、日本人がよく使う「まあ」について、やさしい日本語で話します。
In this episode, you'll learn:
✅ The basic image of まあ
✅ 「まあいいか」: oh well, I won't worry about it
✅ 「まあまあ」: so-so, not bad
✅ 「まあそうですね」: well, I guess so
✅ 「まあそんな感じ」: yeah, something like that
✅ 「まあね」: yeah, kind of
✅ 「大丈夫です」 vs 「まあ大丈夫です」: how まあ softens what you say
✅ Why まあ can't be replaced by one English word (well, kind of, I guess, not bad)
✅ Mini quiz + Maho's Note
📝 Japanese subtitles with furigana are on screen, so you can read along while you listen. Japanese closed captions (CC) are also available.
