"I'm going to Ehime" — is it 旅行 (a trip) or 帰省 (going home)?
帰省 (kisei) is a word you hear a lot in Japan, especially during Obon, the New Year holidays, and Golden Week. It means going back to your hometown or to your family home — and it carries the feeling of "returning to the place where you belong."
In this episode, Maho talks about 帰省 — right before going home to Ehime for six days.
今日は、「帰省」という言葉と、日本人が実家に帰る時の話を、やさしい日本語で話します。
In this episode, Maho talks about:
✅ What 帰省 means
✅ 旅行 vs 帰省: same train or plane, different purpose
✅ 実家 (jikka): your parents' or family's home
✅ 地元 (jimoto) and ふるさと (furusato): what's the difference?
✅ When Japanese people go home: お盆, 年末年始, ゴールデンウィーク
✅ 帰省ラッシュ: crowded shinkansen and traffic jams
✅ What people do when they go home
✅ 「愛媛に帰る」 and 「大阪に帰る」 — why both are 帰る
✅ 「帰省します」 vs 「実家に帰ります」 in everyday conversation
✅ Mini quiz + Maho's Note
📝 Japanese subtitles with furigana are on screen, so you can read along while you listen. Japanese closed captions (CC) are also available.
