Pending Storm Ride Along Maryland Lakes & Greenways Come along for another ride through Maryland neighborhoods, peaceful lakeside paths, winding greenways, wooded trails, quiet backroads, and, of course, another visit to the ever-unpredictable haunted golf course. No racing, no training plans, and no pressure to chase personal records. Well… unless you count trying to complete an entire bike ride before a summer thunderstorm catches up with you. Apparently, we’re doing that again. One of my favorite parts of documenting this same route throughout the year is seeing how dramatically the weather can transform it. The roads stay familiar, but changing skies, shifting temperatures, wind, rain, and storms can make the exact same ride feel completely different. Today, another summer storm was approaching, and once again I decided there was probably enough time to squeeze in the entire route before it arrived. Those of you who remember my previous attempt at outrunning a thunderstorm know that my track record here isn’t particularly impressive. But today… redemption. The storm remained in the distance for most of the ride, creating some fantastic skies along the way. Dark clouds slowly moved across the horizon, the atmosphere became heavier, and distant thunder provided a reminder that the clock was definitely ticking. There’s something incredibly dramatic about riding with an approaching storm nearby. The lighting constantly changes, the trees begin moving as the wind picks up, and familiar lakes and greenways suddenly take on a completely different mood beneath the darkening sky. I finished the ride, got home, and shortly afterward the thunder became louder, lightning started flashing, and the rain finally rolled in. The other big development came at the park, where another tree has fallen across the route. Apparently our summer tree saga isn’t finished yet. After watching previous fallen trees become landmarks, obstacle courses, and eventually targets for our anonymous local tree-cutting hero, we’ve officially got a new one to keep an eye on. Meanwhile, the drivetrain continues surviving everything Maryland weather can throw at it. Heat, humidity, mud, rain, thunderstorms, questionable shifting habits, and now multiple attempts at meteorological racing. Considering rain once magically stopped its creaking, part of me suspects it was disappointed we made it home dry. And yes, before the gear experts arrive in the comments, I am fully aware that I don’t shift nearly as often as I probably should. My strategy remains simple: put the bike in a difficult gear and see who gives up first, me or the drivetrain.
