How do you communicate clearly without being bossy? You make a simple request, explain what needs doing, and somehow it still lands as an order. If you’ve ever been called bossy at work, you may have started softening every request or apologising before you’ve even said what you need. But that can leave your team unsure about what you’re asking. In this video, Nicola Richardson from The People Mentor explores the difference between assertive communication and sounding bossy, and why clarity itself isn’t the problem. Often, it’s about giving instructions without explaining the reason or leaving room for someone to ask a question. 🎯 What you’ll learn: • Why softening your language at work can backfire. • What can make a clear request feel like an order. • How to own your language without apologising for every ask. • How to explain your reasoning so people understand the purpose. • How to separate a clear request from the discussion around it. • How to address the problem without making it personal. We’ll work through four practical communication habits: owning your language, giving your reasoning, separating the ask from the discussion, and tackling the problem rather than the person. I also share a real before-and-after example from a call I ran recently, so you can hear how a change in approach affects the way a message comes across. Being clear about what you need and being open to questions can work together. You can make a direct request while giving someone the context and space they need to respond. If you manage people and find yourself choosing between sounding too forceful and being so careful that your message gets lost, this video will help you find a more confident approach. 💬 Join the conversation Have you ever softened a request so much that it became unclear?
