New manager and feeling unprepared? You were promoted because you were good at your job. Now you’re expected to manage people, delegate, give feedback, and handle difficult conversations nobody taught you how to have.
It’s a big change. The skills that helped you succeed in your previous role don’t automatically prepare you to lead a team. And working harder or trying to have every answer can make the transition even more difficult.
In this video, Nicola Richardson from The People Mentor explores what really changes when you move from doing the work yourself to being responsible for the people doing it.
🎯 What you’ll learn:
• Why the skills that got you promoted can sometimes work against you.
• How perfectionism makes delegation harder.
• Why having all the answers can create a team that depends on you.
• Why difficult conversations get harder the longer you avoid them.
• The difference between being liked and being trusted.
• Why acting confident isn’t the same as building confidence.
• What new managers actually need to learn about managing people.
As a first-time manager, it can feel easier to step in and fix things yourself. You know how to do the work, you care about the quality, and explaining it to someone else takes time. But that pattern can leave you overloaded and your team with fewer opportunities to learn.
The people side of management brings a different set of challenges. Giving honest feedback, addressing performance concerns, and motivating people with different needs all require skills you may never have had the chance to practise.
We’ll explore these common management challenges and why recognising them is an important step towards becoming a more capable, confident leader.
If you’ve been questioning whether you’re cut out for management, consider this: you may be trying to do a job nobody properly prepared you for.
Management is a skill. And skills can be learned.
Whether you’ve just been promoted or have been managing for a while without proper support, this video will help you understand the transition and identify where you need to develop.
