The spring determines how much force it takes to compress the suspension, while the shock oil controls how quickly the suspension moves. Thicker oil slows suspension movement and provides more platform control. Thinner oil allows the suspension to react faster and can help the tires follow rough or changing track surfaces.
There is no single shock-oil weight that works perfectly everywhere. Track grip, surface condition, temperature, springs, shock pistons, tires, ride height, and driving style all affect the result.
