By the late Cold War, the Yakovlev Yak-141 promised supersonic vertical takeoff and Mach 1 flight, but its story began in the rubble of the Second World War, when Soviet designers confronted a hard lesson: aircraft were only as powerful as the runways they depended on. From Boris Yuryev's KIT-1 and the Turbolet to the troubled Yak-36 and Yak-38, Yakovlev engineers pursued rotating nozzles, lift engines, and digital fly-by-wire control. The Yak-41, later marketed as the Yak-141, set Class H world records before the Soviet collapse and a prototype accident stalled the program. Facing bankruptcy, Yakovlev shared its vectoring nozzle data and test results with Lockheed Martin, whose Joint Strike Fighter work became the F-35B. Editorial note: This documentary features independently written narration and analysis. Selected archival footage excerpts provide visual context for the aircraft, missions, engineering decisions, and historical events examined. #WarplaneVault #Yak141 #VTOL
