“Make the Serpent Dance” is a Cinematic Emo Alternative Metal song about temptation, compromise, addiction, self-deception, and the lie that we can keep something dangerous close without eventually being changed by it. It begins with one step. Not surrender. Not destruction. Just one step. “Just one taste, I’ll go no farther.” That is the lie at the center of the song. We convince ourselves that we know where the danger begins. We believe we can walk to the edge without falling. We tell ourselves we are still in control. “I can hold it in my hands I can make the serpent dance.” But the serpent does not become harmless because we think we understand it. The first verse begins with water barely covering the feet. The warnings are still audible. The danger is still obvious. But every compromise makes the next compromise easier. “One more step could do no harm.” By the second verse, the water has reached the knees. The boundaries that once felt permanent begin disappearing. “Yesterday I called it sin Today I’m letting more come in.” The song uses the serpent as a picture of temptation that is entertained instead of fled from. What begins as curiosity can become tolerance. Tolerance can become habit. Habit can become bondage. And eventually the thing we thought we controlled begins controlling us. “You cannot tame the serpent You cannot teach it not to bite. You cannot dance with darkness And command it to be light.” The central warning is simple: While you are taming the serpent, the serpent is taming you. The third verse pushes the metaphor even further. The water reaches the chest. The serpent now knows every weakness, every doorway, every familiar path back in. “What I handled like a toy Learned exactly how to destroy.” Sin rarely announces where it intends to take us. It asks for one more step. One more compromise. One more excuse. One more time. The breakdown confronts the excuses directly: “I’m not that far.” “I know my heart.” “I’ll stop before it takes control.” But sin does not ask how far we intended to go. And temptation does not promise to stop where we planned to stop. Then the song changes. The singer stops negotiating. Stops measuring. Stops asking how close he can stand to the edge. And finally asks God to pull him out. “Father, pull me from the water I have wandered so much farther Than the place I meant to be Cut these coils away from me.” That becomes the turning point of “Make the Serpent Dance.” Freedom begins when the goal changes from controlling temptation to escaping it. Not: How close can I get? But: How far away can I run? Selected lyrics: Just one step into the water Just one taste, I’ll go no farther I know where the danger starts I know how to guard my heart I can hold it in my hands I can make the serpent dance I knew the fang I knew the bite I knew the dark I knew the light Still I whispered to myself I can play with hell itself You cannot tame the serpent You cannot teach it not to bite You cannot dance with darkness And command it to be light You cannot feed the hunger Then decide when it is through While you’re taming the serpent The serpent’s taming you Yesterday I called it sin Today I’m letting more come in Every compromise I make Is another coil I take One coil Two coils Pulling tighter One lie Two lies Feed the fire I thought evil could be trained I thought poison could be chained I thought I could hold the leash I never saw it holding me Sin never asks How far you planned to go And hell never tells you What it came to own Father, pull me from the water I called bondage moderation Called temptation recreation Called the poison something small Till I couldn’t feel the fall I want out I want free Kill the thing That’s killing me You cannot hold the poison And expect to stay unchanged Every time you feed the serpent You’re the one becoming chained You don’t tame the serpent. You flee. “Make the Serpent Dance” is a song about temptation, compromise, addiction, hidden sin, self-control, bondage, repentance, and recognizing when something we thought we controlled has begun controlling us. © 2026 Stephen Kyner.
