The construction of the artillery barracks at Hajmáskér, near Veszprém, began in 1901, intended as a modern artillery training center for the army of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. This vast military complex was ceremonially inaugurated on July 13, 1911. Its grounds housed barracks, stables, training fields, a hospital, an officers' casino, and an imposing, chateau-like command building.
During the First World War, the facility served as both a military training center and a prisoner-of-war camp. In the interwar period, it was used by the Royal Hungarian Army, and following the Second World War, it became a major base for the Soviet army in Hungary.
After the withdrawal of Soviet troops in 1990, the historic complex lost its military function, and its condition gradually deteriorated. Today, the artillery barracks at Hajmáskér stand as a unique, evocative relic of the military architecture of the Monarchy and of 20th-century Hungarian military history.
