The DARK Story of Rolls-Royce: The Name on Every Badge OUTLIVED His Whole Family The official story fits on a museum plaque. Charles Rolls, the man whose name comes first on the most famous badge in motoring, died in a flying accident in the summer of 1910, a pioneer lost too soon. The plaque leaves out almost everything that matters. On July 12, 1910, at a flying meeting outside Bournemouth, Rolls steered his Wright biplane toward a chalk circle in front of a crowded grandstand. The tail on that machine was new. He had changed it shortly before the meeting. He was 32, the third son of a lord, and the first Briton killed in a powered aeroplane. Within six years his father and both brothers were dead, and the family title simply ended. In 1971 the company that carried his name went bankrupt. In 1998 the name itself was sold apart from the factory, and there was no Rolls left alive to have a say. It all started with the order of two names on an enamel badge.
