On August 23, 1939, Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union signed the Hitler-Stalin Pact in Moscow. Alongside the public non-aggression agreement, a secret protocol divided large parts of Eastern Europe into German and Soviet spheres of influence. The pact cleared the way for the German invasion of Poland on September 1, followed by the Soviet invasion from the east on September 17. In the months that followed, Germany and the USSR expanded their political, territorial and economic cooperation, while Poland and the Baltic states faced occupation, repression and mass deportations. The alliance also supplied Nazi Germany with raw materials that supported its campaigns in Western Europe. But tensions between Hitler and Stalin steadily increased. On June 22, 1941, Germany invaded the Soviet Union in Operation Barbarossa, bringing the pact to an end after just twenty-two months.
