Mudda Pappu Avakaya Annam with Pachi Pulusu is one of the most comforting and traditional Andhra-style meals. Soft Sona Masoori rice cooked with creamy Toor Dal, spicy Avakaya mango pickle, garlic and a flavorful tempering, served with tangy-sweet Pachi Pulusu and crispy papad.
This simple Andhra comfort food is full of bold flavours — spicy, tangy, slightly sweet and finished with aromatic ghee.

INGREDIENTS
For Rice
Sona Masoori Rice – 250 g
Water – as required
Salt – ½ tsp
For Mudda Pappu
Toor Dal – 150 g
Water – 500 ml
Turmeric Powder – ¼ tsp
Salt – ½ tsp
For Avakaya Annam
Oil – 2 tbsp
Crushed Garlic – 1 tbsp
Mustard Seeds – 1 tsp
Cumin Seeds – 1 tsp
Green Chillies – 2, slit
Curry Leaves – 1 sprig
Avakaya Mango Pickle – 3 tbsp
Red Chilli Powder – 1 tsp
Turmeric Powder – ¼ tsp
Salt – as required
Cooked Mudda Pappu – all
Cooked Rice – all
Ghee – 1 tbsp
FOR PACHi PULUSU
Tamarind – 30 g
Water – 500 ml
Red Chilli Powder – 1 tsp
Jaggery – 1½ tbsp
Salt – 1 tsp
Onion – 1 medium, thinly sliced
Fresh Coriander – 2 tbsp
For Baghara
Ghee – 1 tbsp
Mustard Seeds – 1 tsp
Methi Seeds – ¼ tsp
Cumin Seeds – 1 tsp
Dry Red Chillies – 2
Turmeric Powder – ¼ tsp
Hing 1/2 tsp
For Serving
Papad – as required
Extra Ghee – optional

RECIPE METHOD
Step 1 – Cook the Rice
Wash 250 g Sona Masoori rice thoroughly.
Add water and cook until the rice becomes soft and fully cooked.
Keep the cooked rice aside.
Step 2 – Make Mudda Pappu
Wash 150 g Toor Dal.
Add the dal, 500 ml water, ½ tsp salt and ¼ tsp turmeric powder.
Cook until the dal becomes completely soft.
Mash the dal lightly and keep aside.
Step 3 – Make Avakaya Pappu Annam
Heat 2 tbsp oil in a handi.
Add:
Crushed garlic
Mustard seeds
Cumin seeds
Green chillies
Curry leaves
Allow the tempering to become aromatic.
Add 3 tbsp Avakaya mango pickle and sauté briefly.
Add the cooked Mudda Pappu.
Add red chilli powder, turmeric powder and adjust salt.
Mix well.
Now add the cooked Sona Masoori rice.
Mix everything gently.
Cook on low flame until the rice and dal come together and become thick and creamy.
Finish with 1 tbsp ghee.
Your Mudda Pappu Avakaya Annam is ready.

PACHi PULUSU
Extract tamarind pulp from 30 g tamarind.
Add water and mix well.
Add:
Red chilli powder
Jaggery
Salt
Sliced onions
Fresh coriander
Mix everything together.
Baghara for Pachi Pulusu
Heat 1 tbsp ghee.
Add mustard seeds, methi seeds, cumin seeds and dry red chillies.
Once aromatic, add turmeric powder.
Pour the hot tempering into the Pachi Pulusu.
Mix well and allow it to rest for a few minutes.

Serve hot Mudda Pappu Avakaya Annam with flavorful Pachi Pulusu and crispy papad.
For an authentic Andhra-style experience, add a little extra ghee over the hot rice before serving. ❤️
