In this video, I travel to Khurd village in Jhelum, Punjab, Pakistan, the birthplace and childhood home of legendary Indian actor Sunil Dutt. Before becoming one of the biggest names in Indian cinema, Sunil Dutt was born here as Balraj Dutt on 6 June 1929. Today, decades after Partition, I visited this historic village to explore the place connected to Sunil Dutt’s childhood, his family and his early memories. In this video, you will see the village, the ancestral house associated with the Dutt family, the surrounding area and the places connected with the early life of the Bollywood legend. Sunil Dutt’s story is much more than a Bollywood success story. His childhood was deeply connected with the Punjab of pre-Partition India. He was only five years old when his father, Diwan Raghunath Dutt, passed away. Later, when Partition took place in 1947, Sunil Dutt was around 18 years old. His family was forced to leave their home and move to India during one of the most difficult periods in the history of the subcontinent. One of the most remarkable parts of his Partition story is that his family was helped by a Muslim friend of his father named Yakub. Sunil Dutt later recalled that Yakub helped his family escape safely towards Jhelum. This part of his life remains a powerful reminder that humanity and friendship can survive even during the darkest periods of history. After leaving Pakistan, Sunil Dutt eventually built a new life in India. He studied in Mumbai and worked before entering the world of entertainment. His voice and personality first brought him attention through radio, and filmmaker Ramesh Saigal gave him his first major film opportunity in Railway Platform in 1955. Since his birth name was Balraj Dutt, the screen name Sunil Dutt was adopted to avoid confusion with the already established actor Balraj Sahni. From that first step in cinema, Sunil Dutt went on to become a celebrated actor, producer, director and politician. He appeared in numerous memorable films and became particularly known for movies such as Mother India, Padosan, Milan, Waqt and many others. But behind the famous Bollywood star was a man who never completely forgot the village where his life began. Years after Partition, Sunil Dutt was able to visit his childhood village in Pakistan again. He described the experience as deeply emotional and recalled how people in the village still remembered his family, including his mother and siblings. His visit showed that memories of childhood and one’s birthplace can remain alive even after decades and across an international border. In this video, I try to capture that emotional connection by visiting the very place associated with the early life of Sunil Dutt. This is not just a video about an old house or a village. It is a story about Sunil Dutt, his childhood, Partition, migration, memories, friendship, family and the place he once called home. It is also a small journey into the shared history of Punjab before and after Partition — a history in which people, families and memories became separated by a border, but their connections to their ancestral homes remained.
