Their research going back to 2000 shows that “if you have $100 crude, you have $6 corn,” and that oil prices have a tight connection to Iowa farmland returns. Bruere also asks how long farmers can count on federal payments, which he estimates made up roughly half of 2025 net farm income, as the national debt nears $41 trillion.
