Daimler is shutting down the Portland factory that has built Western Star trucks for a quarter century, and roughly 387 workers are losing their jobs. The company is calling it a soft truck market. But at the same time, Daimler's own executives have been telling investors the truck market is about to boom, and the work is heading to non-union plants in the South. So why close the plant now, and where is the work really going? This documentary breaks down the four-move corporate playbook behind the Western Star plant closure in Portland, Oregon: the slow squeeze of a four-day work week and Oregon Work Share, the fuel-tank department quietly moved to a non-union shop in Utah, the WARN notice and mass layoff, and the move of Western Star X-Series production to right-to-work North and South Carolina. We also get into the 2009 Portland closure Daimler once reversed over pension liability, the 40 million dollar engineering facility it opened just days before the shutdown, and how the same squeeze-and-relocate pattern is now hitting Mack and International across the American trucking industry.
