SCOTT RICHARDS - SALT IN THE SEAMS

From Detroit’s gritty industrial roots to the laid-back shores of Newport Beach, artist and designer Scott Richards has always been chasing a feeling... the rhythm of the ocean, the beauty in imperfection and the stories held in handmade things. This short film traces Scott’s creative journey: from sketching surf ads as a kid longing for the coast, to shaping iconic brands such as Quiksilver, Alternative Apparel and Stance. Ultimately, that path led to Slightly Choppy, Scott's personal canvas for craftsmanship, nostalgia and the imperfectly human. Inside his Newport Beach studio, Scott works with reclaimed materials and time-worn fabrics, painting, stitching and shaping flags that carry the marks of the maker. Every artifact tells a story, a tactile link between surf and sail culture’s past and present. Exploring themes of imperfection, process, and place, the film dives into Scott’s philosophy that beauty lives in what’s slightly choppy: handmade, irregular, and full of character.
