I Was Afraid to Move Back to Nigeria… Until I Did It
Going back home to Nigeria after living abroad for many years came with a lot of fear and uncertainty.
Like many Nigerians in the diaspora, I had heard all the warnings: Nigeria has changed, you won’t cope, you will regret it, you won’t be able to adjust, and you should never give up the life you’ve built abroad.
But after making the decision to move back and actually spending one full year living in Nigeria, something unexpected happened.
The fear started to disappear.
In this video, I talk about what living in Nigeria for one year did for me mentally and emotionally, and how it changed the way I think about going home.
One of the biggest things I had to overcome was my fear of driving in Nigeria. After living in the UK for so long, I was genuinely scared of driving back home. But once I was there, I had to do it—and I did.
And that experience taught me something bigger:
Sometimes fear doesn’t disappear before you act. Sometimes you have to act first, and the fear disappears along the way.
Going home did not make me believe that Nigeria is perfect. It didn’t make the challenges disappear. But it gave me something I didn’t have before: experience, confidence and choice.
I now know that I can live in Nigeria.
I know what I love about it.
I know what frustrates me.
I know what I can tolerate.
And I know what I cannot.
Most importantly, I no longer have to make decisions about Nigeria based purely on fear.
If you’re living abroad and thinking about moving back to Nigeria, relocating to Nigeria, returning home, or simply spending more time in Nigeria, I hope this video gives you another perspective.
I’d love to hear from you:
What is your biggest fear about moving back home?
And if you’ve already returned, what was the biggest fear you had to overcome?
Thank you so much for watching and supporting my channel. ❤️
