Filmed on October 2 and 3, 2026, in Riksgränsen, Norrbotten County. It is the last stop along the Iron Ore Line (Malmbanan) before the Norwegian border, which lies just a few hundred meters away. Across the border, the line continues as the Ofotbanen to Narvik in Nordland County, Norway. Riksgränsen is a stunningly beautiful location surrounded by the rugged mountains of upper Lapland. The track sits quite high up on the slopes of Mount Gátternjunni, home to the area's popular ski slopes. From here, there are beautiful views of the mountain landscape to the north, the village of Riksgränsen, and Lake Vássejávri.
What makes the Riksgränsen stop unique is that it is largely situated within a snow shed—an artificial tunnel built to protect the railway from avalanches. At the western end of the platform stands the kilometer marker with the highest number on the entire Swedish railway network: 1,542 km. At the eastern approach to Riksgränsen, there is a Norwegian railway signal—another unusual feature. It serves as the distant signal for Bjørnfjell, the first station across the border.
While we were filming the video, the stop was at times enveloped in a thick cloud; once it cleared, the company operating the ski resort began using a helicopter to transport materials right next to the Iron Ore Line. The trains featured in the video include LKAB’s iron ore trains powered by IORE locomotives (the world’s most powerful electric locomotives, delivering 15,000 horsepower per pair), Kaunis Iron ore trains (slightly shorter trains operated by Railcare using triple 482 Traxx locomotives), CargoNet freight trains (Arctic Rail Express), and SJ InterCity trains hauled by Rc6 locomotives.
