Ashes on the Tide | Powerful Viking Duet | Authentic Norse Funeral & Vengeance Ballad Ashes on the Tide — we built the pyre on Hrafnfjörðr's frozen bank, laid his weapons blade to chest, carved his name in Elder Futhark deep, bound the hel-shoes for Gjöll's long road, and set him burning on the longship oak. Then cast the hazel rods before the Thing. An authentic Norse ballad of the two things that cannot be separated in the old law — the funeral that honors the dead, and the blóðhefnd that follows when the death was murder. Hel-shoes, silver coin, seiðr-chant, rune-post, wolf-cross — every rite performed exactly as the old ways demanded. The ashes drift on the outgoing tide. But ash and iron are not the same to us. 🔥 Lyrics: We built the pyre on Hrafnfjörðr's frozen bank, His weapons laid beside him, blade to chest. The longship oak burned green before it sank — We sent him off the way he liked it best. I carved his name in Elder Futhark deep, On birchwood post we drove beside the flame. No thrall-death this — no straw-bed shallow sleep — He died with iron — and he died with name. I combed his beard with juniper and salt, Bound hel-shoes tight so Gjöll would know his step. The völva chanted — no one found a fault — Nine words of seiðr while the longhouse wept. I placed the silver coin upon his eye, Set mead beside him for the long road's thirst. I did not beg the Norns to tell me why — I only swore the vengeance would come first. The ashes drift on the outgoing tide, But ash and iron are not the same to us. We sent him burning to the other side — Now send his killers there without a fuss. I cast the hazel rods before the Thing, The lawspeaker declared the blóðhefnd just. Three kinsmen took the oath of reckoning — We do not hunt for silver — only dust. At Sigtún's gate we found the man who ran, His jarl-mark carved above his longhouse door. I stood before him as the morning began — He offered weregild. I said: not anymore. I watched from Hrafnfjörðr's cliff when they returned, Three ships, not four — I counted from the stone. One man had paid with everything he'd earned — And my son walked the final stretch alone. The Thing declared the feud-roll closed that day, The wolf-cross carved, the silver weregild spurned. The skald will sing of what we chose to pay — And what the blóðhefnd finally returned. The ashes drift on the outgoing tide, But ash and iron are not the same to us. We sent him burning to the other side — Now send his killers there without a fuss. Seiðr-words I spoke above the flames that night, Called Hel to open early for one soul. Asked Óðinn's ravens: was the death done right? They circled once — and that was all the toll. The rune-carved post will stand through seven snows, His name will hold while birchwood holds the ground. What blóðhefnd takes — the whole of Norsedom knows — Is paid in full when justice has been found. The pyre is cold... The tide has turned... His name stands carved... The debt is earned. 🎵 The Blood Price →    / .  . 🎵 Holmgang →    / .  . 🎵 Blood Oath →    / .  . #vikingmusic #norsefuneral #bloðhefnd #vikingduet #ravenhold Ravenhold — atmospheric viking music born from fire, frost and forgotten fjords.
