Welcome to Karnataka, India. Today, we explore Pattadakal – a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its temples and traditions. Pattadakal was built in the seventh and eighth centuries by the Chalukya kings. It stands on the banks of the Malaprabha River, close to Badami and Aihole. This place was once used for royal coronations and cultural gatherings. The temples here are special because they mix two styles – the Nagara style of North India and the Dravidian style of South India. The Virupaksha Temple, the largest, was built by Queen Lokamahadevi to celebrate her husband’s victory. The Papanatha Temple is unique, combining both styles in one design. Most temples are dedicated to Lord Shiva. The carvings show stories from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Bhagavata Purana. There is also a Jain temple called Narayana, built later. With its carved pillars, shrines, and river setting, Pattadakal is not just a group of temples. It is a symbol of India’s rich heritage and the creativity of the Chalukya artisans.
