Lumbini || Nepal || Birthplace of the Buddha

Welcome to Lumbini – a sacred place in Nepal, known as the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha. More than 2,500 years ago, Queen Maya gave birth to the Buddha here. Because of this, Lumbini is one of the four most important pilgrimage sites for Buddhists, along with Bodh Gaya, Sarnath, and Kushinagar. At the heart of Lumbini stands the Mayadevi Temple. Inside, ancient ruins and a marker stone show the exact spot of the Buddha’s birth. Nearby is the Ashoka Pillar, built in the third century BCE by Emperor Ashoka. Its inscription confirms that the Buddha was born here. Close to the temple lies the sacred pond, Puskarini, where Queen Maya bathed before giving birth, and where the baby Buddha was washed. The Lumbini complex is divided into three main areas – the Sacred Garden, the Monastic Zone, and the Cultural Center. The Sacred Garden holds the birthplace and holy monuments. The Monastic Zone has monasteries built by different countries, each showing unique cultural styles. The Cultural Center includes the Lumbini Museum, the World Peace Pagoda, and research institutes. In 2013, excavations revealed even older structures beneath the Mayadevi Temple, showing that people worshipped here as early as 1000 BCE. In 1997, UNESCO declared Lumbini a World Heritage Site. Today, Lumbini is not only a religious site but also a center for peace and tourism. Pilgrims and visitors from all over the world come here to meditate, chant, and learn about Buddhism.
