What Victor Vescovo Found in Mariana Trench After 15 Dives SHOCKED Scientists At the bottom of the Challenger Deep — the lowest point on the surface of the planet — the pressure is approximately 16,000 pounds per square inch. To give that a number you can hold: atmospheric pressure at sea level is about 14.7 pounds per square inch. At the bottom of the Mariana Trench, the pressure is roughly 1,090 times that. Every square inch of any object at that depth is carrying a load equivalent to a small car. A standard submarine hull at that depth would be crushed before it reached halfway down. The titanium sphere that Victor Vescovo sat inside for four hours at 35,853 feet had walls 90 millimeters thick — roughly 3.5 inches — and had been certified by an independent engineering authority to survive the load. He described sitting in it as being inside a ball. What that ball found when it reached the bottom on April 28th, 2019, confirmed some things scientists expected, contradicted others, and produced one image that nobody who has thought seriously about ocean pollution has been able to fully set aside since.
