Royal Anthem of Norway - Kongesangen [Norwegian / English]

Royal Anthem of Norway - Kongesangen ---------------------------------- Kongesangen | The King's Song Also known as : "Gud sign vår konge god!" (English: 'God Bless Our Good King!') Lyrics : N. Vogtmann (c. 1800) and Gustav Jensen (1906) Music : Traditional, set to the tune of "God Save the King" Adopted : 1906 "Kongesangen" ("The King's Song") is the official royal anthem of the Kingdom of Norway. While "Ja, vi elsker dette landet" serves as the national anthem, "Kongesangen" is performed specifically in the presence of the monarch or members of the Royal Family during state functions, royal celebrations, and military ceremonies. Sharing its iconic melody with "God Save the King," the song is an enduring symbol of Norwegian constitutional monarchy. History and Origins: The text traces its origin to a hymn written around 1800 by N. Vogtmann ("Gud sign vår Konge god"). In 1841, famed Norwegian poet Henrik Wergeland translated the British anthem into Norwegian, dedicating it to King Carl Johan (who ruled Norway and Sweden in personal union). The definitive modern text was authored in 1906 by the clergyman and poet Gustav Jensen for the coronation of King Haakon VII and Queen Maud—Norway's first independent monarchs following the dissolution of the union with Sweden in 1905. Jensen's version was later integrated into Landstads reviderte salmebok (Landstad's Revised Hymnal), securing its place in Norwegian tradition. Structure and Symbolism: Written in Norwegian (Bokmål), the anthem consists of two stanzas. It functions as a solemn prayer asking God to bless the King with courage, strength, and guidance, while expressing the people's unwavering loyalty to their monarch and homeland. Today, "Kongesangen" is played by military bands and sung across the country at royal birthdays, state visits, and official anniversaries as a solemn tribute to the crown. ------------------------------ #anthem #nationalanthem #Royalanthem #norway #norwegian #norwegianhistory #kingharald #scandinavia #europe #royalfamily #oslo #nordicmusic #nordic ----------------------------- 🔔 Like , Share And Subscribe And hit the notification bell for more national anthems and historical insights and avoid political or hateful commentary.
