Does He Thank the Servant? | Jesus Teaches Humble Obedience | Luke 17:7–10 | Christian Scripture Song Do we serve God because we expect recognition, or because Jesus Christ is our Lord? “Doth he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded him? I trow not.” — Luke 17:9 (KJV) “Does He Thank the Servant?” is inspired by Jesus' challenging teaching in Luke 17:7–10 about humility, obedience, and the proper attitude of those who serve God. Jesus describes a servant returning from working in the field. Rather than expecting his master to serve him immediately, the servant continues fulfilling his responsibilities. Jesus then applies the illustration to His disciples: “So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do.” — Luke 17:10 (KJV) These words challenge our pride, our expectations of recognition, and the temptation to believe that obedience places God in our debt. SCRIPTURE FOUNDATION Luke 17:7–10 — Jesus teaches that faithful service is our duty and gives us no grounds for boasting before God. Luke 6:46 — Jesus asks why people call Him Lord but do not obey His commands. John 13:12–17 — Jesus demonstrates humble service by washing His disciples' feet and calls them to follow His example. Philippians 2:5–11 — Jesus humbles Himself, takes the form of a servant, and becomes obedient unto death. Ephesians 2:8–10 — Salvation is God's gift of grace through faith, and believers are created in Christ Jesus for good works. THE MESSAGE Jesus confronts a dangerous attitude that can develop even among those who sincerely desire to serve God. We may begin to believe that our sacrifices, obedience, or religious accomplishments entitle us to special recognition. But God does not owe us salvation, favor, or praise because we have fulfilled our responsibilities. Everything we possess ultimately comes from Him. Our abilities, opportunities, strength, and even our capacity to serve depend upon His grace. Jesus Christ calls us to more than outward religious activity. He calls us to love Him, obey His Word, serve others humbly, and recognize His authority over every part of our lives. The servant in Jesus' illustration is not being taught that his work has no value. Rather, the lesson is that obedience does not make God indebted to us. Nor does this passage deny God's love for His children or His gracious promises of reward. It corrects the pride that treats faithful service as a claim against Him. For anyone involved in ministry, discipleship, recovery, or serving others, this teaching carries an important reminder. We do not serve Jesus Christ to earn salvation. We serve because He is Lord. We do not obey through self-sufficiency. We depend daily upon His grace and the power of the Holy Spirit. And when we have faithfully carried out what He commands, the glory still belongs to Him. May this song encourage humility, faithful obedience, and a deeper understanding of what it means to follow Jesus Christ as both Savior and Lord. We are His servants. He is our Master. And all glory belongs to God. ABOUT THE BROKEN AND REDEEMED The Broken and Redeemed is a Scripture-centered Christian music ministry dedicated to bringing the Bible to life through original songs.
