The 8-4-3 rule is usually taught to 30-year-olds: the first chunk of money takes about eight years, the second about four, the third about three. If you are 60 or older and saved for thirty years, you are not waiting for the fast part. You are standing in it.
In this video I follow two couples, both 65, both with $1 million and $4,200 a month of Social Security. Greg and Linda take $39,000 a year (Morningstar's 2026 safe starting rate of 3.9%) and still have about $1.11 million at 75. Ray and Carol take $24,000 and end up with about $1.82 million at 85, with a lot of trips that never happened.
What we cover:
0:00 The 8-4-3 rule from the far side of retirement
4:27 The crossover: when the market adds more than you do
8:52 The most expensive afternoon of a retirement (crash at 66 vs. 79, panic selling)
13:55 The pile you are afraid to touch (EBRI data, guardrails, permission to spend)
18:49 Which account the money comes from (2026 deductions, 0% capital gains, Medicare)
23:48 The year the IRS starts choosing for you (RMDs at 73 and 75)
27:58 What slows the 3 down: fees, shortcuts, and honest caveats
Numbers checked on October 27, 2026: Morningstar State of Retirement Income 2026 (3.9%), Morningstar Mind the Gap 2026 (8.7% vs. 9.9%, 10 years to end of 2025), EBRI analysis of the Health and Retirement Study, IRS 2026 inflation adjustments and senior deduction, CMS 2026 Part B premium ($202.90), SSA 2027 COLA (3.6%). Couple projections assume 5% a year after inflation, in today's dollars, before state taxes.
