Joan Rivers and Edgar Rosenberg built a 22-year marriage that looked like a Hollywood success story. He managed every contract, every Tonight Show appearance, every Vegas booking. She performed 93 times for Johnny Carson and became the first woman to guest-host. Behind the scenes, the partnership was something else entirely.
Edgar fired himself from NBC negotiations in 1982 because they wouldn't let him produce Joan's show. Four years later he pushed Joan toward a Fox contract that required her to betray Johnny Carson without warning. When Fox fired Edgar as executive producer in May 1987, the marriage collapsed. Three months later he checked into a Philadelphia hotel and took his own life. Joan was $37 million in debt.
What the tabloids missed: Edgar had been gay before they married. Joan knew. The arrangement gave him legitimacy in 1965 television, gave her a partner who'd never compete for the spotlight. The codependency wasn't romantic. It was transactional. Joan spent 27 years writing journal entries to a dead man, apologizing for jokes and defending the choice she made in her final entry: 'I chose comedy over you. I'd do it again. I'm sorry. I'm not sorry.' She carried his wedding photo in her wallet until the day she died.
